Pew Study: More patients turning to the Web
The pew Research center’s Internet and American Life Project and the California HealthCare Foundation together released the result of the “ The Social Life of Health Information” report. The result was amazing that almost 61 percent of the Americans are looking on the web for medical advice and information. Rachael, who was diagnosed with breast cancer on 2003 underwent surgery and was under radio therapy when she first started looking into the web for information.
She was really surprised to hear from people who had similar problems and was happy to get suggestions and comments from them. Now Rachael is the key member of the health information website WebMD and has written many posts.
Apart from people who are just reading and knowing information from the web there are also a smaller group almost 20 percent who write post sharing their thoughts and experience. These people are called e-patients, a cadre to which Rachael belongs to. The report also showed the comparison between 2005 where only 25% of Americans looked the internet for medical related queries. The amount is doubles this year shows that more people are interested to know things on web and all medical practices are getting digitalized.
