In 2001 Japanese electronics company Sony were a true giant of global capitalism. Their successes in the areas of television, stereos and, famously, computer games; their Playstation and Playstation 2 consoles were already massive global successes.

But one area in which they had very little success is the area of mobile phone production. Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson was, at the time, the third largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world but had fallen on hard times. It was this scenario that led to the merger of the two companies in order to finally crack the mobile phone market and ten years down the line it is evident that this venture has been extremely successful, with Sony Ericsson becoming one of the most popular producers of mobile technology in the world.
