In 2001 Japanese electronics company Sony were a true giant of global capitalism. Their successes in the areas of television, stereos and, famously, computer games; their Playstation and Playstation 2 consoles were already massive global successes.

But one area in which they had very little success is the area of mobile phone production. Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson was, at the time, the third largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world but had fallen on hard times.
